UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS Notes from the Underground

September 17-23, 1998 PULSE NIAGARA

Until recently, The United Empire Loyalists were unknown to most everyone outside of the patchouli and buckskin crowd. This Vancouver psychedelic band recorded a single 45, "No No No (You Don't Love Me)", played alongside many of the heavies of the paisley days (a Pender ballroom slot opening for the Grateful Dead left the most identifiable print on the outfit), then vanished into the ether. A 1990 reunion led core members Jeff Ridley and Rick Enns to piece this collection together. While the bulk of this material is culled from 30-year-old source tapes, it captures a fragment of that era. Those with a taste for choogling psych-blues breakdowns will want to seek out this missing chapter of Canadian musical history. (MC)
